Georgia First-Time Visitor Guide 2026: 10 Essential Things to Know

Georgia First-Time Visitor Guide 2026: 10 Essential Things to Know Before You Go

Georgia — the country at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, beneath the Caucasus Mountains, where 8,000 years of winemaking meet snow-capped peaks and extraordinary hospitality.

If you’re visiting for the first time, here are 10 essential things you need to know before you fly.

1. 🛡️ Travel Insurance Is Now Mandatory (Since January 1, 2026)

The biggest change for 2026: all visitors — including visa-free travelers — must carry health and accident insurance.

  • Minimum coverage: 30,000 GEL (~$11,280 USD)
  • Must be valid for your entire stay
  • Proof may be checked at your departure airport and/or immigration

💡 Tip: Buy travel insurance before departure and keep a digital + printed copy of your certificate.

2. 🛂 Visa Policy

Most nationalities benefit from Georgia’s generous visa-free policy. Many countries (including all EU, US, UK, South Korea, and more) can stay up to 1 year without a visa.

Check the official Georgian visa portal for your specific nationality.

3. 💰 Budget — Georgia Is NOT as Cheap as It Once Was

Older travel blogs calling Georgia “rock-bottom cheap” are outdated. Prices have risen significantly since 2022.

2025 average daily spend: 390 GEL / ~$147 USD

Budget Tier Per Person/Day
Budget $35–50
Mid-range $70–120
High-end $150+
  • Food/grocery prices: 8–12% YoY increase (2025)
  • National Museum entrance: 40 GEL (~$15.04)
  • Mid-range restaurant meal: 25–40 GEL per person

4. 🚕 Taxis — Download Bolt, Ignore Airport Touts

  • Bolt is the standard ride-hailing app (no Uber in Georgia)
  • NEVER accept rides from drivers inside airport terminals
  • Taxis have no meters — agree on price upfront if not using an app
  • Alternatives: Airport bus #337, or pre-booked GoTrip transfer

5. 📱 SIM Card — Get Magti

A local SIM is essential for taxi apps, navigation, and mountain travel.

Item Price
Magti SIM card 10 GEL (~$3.76)
Unlimited 5G data 10 GEL/week (~$3.76)

⚠️ Avoid buying at the airport — higher prices, limited options. Register at a city Magti branch with your passport. Global eSIMs have patchy mountain coverage.

6. 💳 Money & Cards — Cash Is Still King

  • Currency: Georgian Lari (GEL)
  • Cards and Apple/Google Pay work in cities
  • Cash essential for: tipping, markets, guesthouses, car rentals, private drivers
  • Use ATMs, not exchange offices (Basisbank and CartuBank: no fees, up to 2,000 GEL/withdrawal)

7. 🍽️ Tipping & Service Charges

  • VAT 18%: Included in menu prices since 2024
  • 10% service charge: Common and legitimate (applies to everyone)
  • Service charge rarely goes to staff
  • Small cash tip for good service is appreciated but optional
  • 10% tip is polite for good restaurant service, guides, drivers

8. 🚇 Public Transport in Tbilisi — MetroMoney Card

  • MetroMoney card (2 GEL): Works for metro, buses, cable cars — also works in Batumi
  • Fare: 1 GEL/ride, free transfers within 90 minutes
  • Or tap with contactless card/phone (~1.50 GEL/ride)
  • Fully integrated with Google Maps

9. 📅 Best Time to Visit

Season Rating Notes
Late Spring (Apr–Jun) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Mild temps, wildflowers, fewer crowds
Autumn (mid-Sep–early Nov) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Grape harvest (Rtveli), beautiful colors
Summer (Jul–Aug) ⭐⭐⭐ Hot in Tbilisi, but best for mountain hiking
Winter (Dec–Mar) ⭐⭐⭐ Great for skiing, city breaks

🏔️ Mountain regions: Tusheti, Khevsureti are accessible late June – early October only.

10. 🤝 Culture — “You Get What You Give”

Everyday interactions in Georgia are more reserved than you might expect. Service industry staff are direct and task-focused — this isn’t unfriendliness.

Georgia’s legendary hospitality surfaces in incidental encounters — on the street, at a table, over a glass of homemade wine. Show respect, and you’ll receive it back tenfold.
